Boston’s popularity as an innovative education and employment center, coupled with our reputation as welcoming to new immigrants, has transformed local housing markets. Mayor Walsh’s commitment to build over 50,000 new units by 2030 is on-track toward increasing housing availability. Yet the development of new affordable housing has been accompanied by rising housing costs, gentrification, and market forces that make living in Boston less affordable for families and the 40+ percent of residents who live alone. While Boston’s housing challenge reflects national urban trends, our population growth is faster than the national average. How are we preparing for a more densely populated city that can remain affordable for existing and new residents?
