Welcome to the London Architecture Diary, your essential guide to architecture exhibitions and events taking place across the city, brought to you by New London Architecture.
This evening event will give an opportunity to tour RIBA London Award Winner The Gin Distillery with the owners Rupert Scott and Leo Wood.
Rupert Scott, founder and director at Open Practice Architecture completed the conversion of this Victorian Gin Distillery into his family home in Whitechapel, which was longlisted for RIBA House of the Year 2018.
As the distillery is surrounded by other buildings the design challenge was to bring in lots of natural light whilst maintaining privacy. The choice of materials focuses on simplicity and durability. Exposed steelwork with timber and polished concrete surfaces make up the ground floor living spaces with large Crittall windows reinstating the original rhythm of apertures.
A black steel staircase at the back of the home emerges into a sun-filled landing off which sit two modern cabin style bedrooms and a bathroom with Scandinavian redwood ceilings. The enclosed terrace connects to the bedrooms and allows for a tranquil outdoor escape from the bustle of surrounding Whitechapel. Throughout the interior, carefully placed apertures allow patterns of light to drift across the surfaces as each day progresses.
The project won an RIBA London Award in 2018 and was longlisted for RIBA House of the Year 2018.
Each tour duration 1 hour. Limited places, cost £35.50 with complimentary prosecco and nibbles. In Whitechapel, exact address provided to bookers.
