Welcome to the London Architecture Diary, your essential guide to architecture exhibitions and events taking place across the city, brought to you by New London Architecture.
This evening event will an exclusive opportunity to tour Round House with architect/owner Alex Michaelis of Michaelis Boyd Associates.
The house in Brook Green uses traditional building materials while seeking to showcase great modern design, skilfully demonstrating that new builds can be imaginative and family homes needn’t sacrifice style.
The brief was to design a modern house that works efficiently for a large family, while being sympathetic in its relationship to the architectural context. Previously the site was an operational MOT centre and architecturally it gave little to work with. However, with the need for eight bedrooms, the 3,500 square-foot space has been transformed cleverly to achieve this while allowing the building to breathe within the site.
With children at the forefront of the design, there are slides to hidden areas and a fireman’s pole mischievously connecting the ground and first floor, there are plenty of playful details that elevate the project to a truly bespoke piece of residential architecture. Both towers have an accessible sun roof, whilst on the ground floor a glass sliding door opens onto a courtyard and a lap pool.
Each tour duration 1 hour. Limited places, cost £35.50 with complimentary prosecco and nibbles. In Brook Green, Hammersmith & Fulham, exact address provided to bookers.
