Welcome to the London Architecture Diary, your essential guide to architecture exhibitions and events taking place across the city, brought to you by New London Architecture.
This evening event will give an exclusive opportunity to tour RIBA London Award Winner Dartmouth Park House, with the owners and AY Architects.
Located within the Dartmouth Park Conservation Area, this project significantly remodels and extends an end-of-terrace Victorian building. It creates a contemporary, airy and bright single family home.
The design enhances the original features of the building and improves areas that had been poorly altered over time. The street elevation takes a shopfront character while the extension of the rear of the house includes two terraces and a sunken courtyard. The use of daylight has been central to the project and sunlight penetrates deep into the ground floor and basement of the house.
A series of sequential ‘cuts’ and ‘extrusions’ interplay with daylight and views to create a strong sense of movement through the house. A large void is carved out, intersecting all four floors. It incorporates a deep staircase that encourages a continuous movement, maintained through the design of the balustrade as it extends towards the terrace at the rear extension of the house. Special attention has been given to the form, detailing and crafting of all timber elements of the house, primarily using mahogany, and to the oval figure of the staircase which animates the interior in a delicate manner.
The project won an RIBA London Award 2018, was Shortlisted for the RIBA Stephen Lawrence Prize 2018, and was was Longlisted for RIBA House of the Year 2018.
Event duration 1 hour. Limited places, cost £35.50 with complimentary prosecco and nibbles.
