Based in London and Sussex, Adam Richards Architects has built a reputation through designs for houses, museums, interiors and art installations.
Open Studios allows us to informally share our working methods and also to show drawings and models relating to some of our ‘work in progress’ that includes two private houses in the South Downs National Park and also the proposal for the Museum of British Folklore – a drawing of which was included in The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2014.
Our projects often involve unique objects and unusual sites. In making spaces that respond to these we seek to bring to bear a continuity of cultural history, designing buildings that are rich in reference. By re-configuring and de-stabilising these references, we aim to create contemporary ‘Wunderkammers’, where the buildings’ users are able to participate in the construction of meaning.
Adam Richards Architects recently attracted critical acclaim for our successful redevelopment of Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft. The Sunday Times considered it to be the best architectural project of the year, with Hugh Pearman calling it 'an important building for English rural architecture’. It was also the winner of the RIBA South East Regional Award 2014 and awarded the Arnold Laver Gold Award, Wood Award, 2014 as well as being shortlisted for the prestigious Art Fund Museum of the Year Prize.
