RIBA London Open Studios: West

CJCT careyjones chapmantolcher will take part in the RIBA London Open Studios 2015, as part of the London Festival of Architecture, with a half-day event entitled: Make your Place – Shape your Future. In line with this year’s theme ‘Work in Progress’, the company will host a mini in-house design competition, open to A-Level students from selected London colleges, and will ask the entrants to re-interpret an existing building, site or landmark across London as a new place for community activities and interaction.

CJCT’s aspiration is to actively involve young people, interested in developing a career in Architecture, with the life of an established London-based architectural practice and to engage them in a fun yet stimulating design exercise. The event aims to encourage them to be part of the ever-changing, work-in-progress architectural process, and, by offering an insight to the challenges that Architects face during their daily work, it intends to provide them with a deeper understanding of the extraordinary benefits society can gain from the design activity.

The final brief will be revealed to the students on the day before the Open Studio and the half-day event will entail:

-a welcome morning breakfast, during which the students will learn about the role of Architects as “place-makers”

-the competition brief, in which the design task will be illustrated

-the ‘Make your Place’ competition, a one-hour exercise in which the student teams will execute the assigned theme and then present their proposal.

-a farewell lunch, during which a jury composed of senior members of the practice will designate the winner and award the ‘CJCT’s Place-makers of the Year’ Award. The teams will learn how to produce a piece of work to a tight deadline and the criteria required to deliver a successful project.
