Welcome to the London Architecture Diary, your essential guide to architecture exhibitions and events taking place across the city, brought to you by New London Architecture.
We have been the dreamers. We have been the sufferers. Now we are the builders.
Increasingly, the arts are being employed by developers to deliver community engagement and 'consultation'. But how do we ensure these strategies and their outcomes go beyond public relations and actually influence development?
How can we build upon the dreams and ideas that come about from participatory arts practice?
Artist Rebecca Davies and The Oasis Social Club invite you to South London Gallery for an evening of panel discussion, screenings and performance looking at participatory arts practice and how it is used and/or abused in the shaping of our cities.
Davies’ London alter ego, Mavis Davis, together with The Tabards, will lead the night. Mavis is based on a real Hackney resident; a warm, welcoming woman with stories from being a bar lady in the area for 40 years. Davies’ characters draw on the Mavis Davis in every UK community, women who are funny and instrumental in bringing people together and are not to be messed with!
Accompanied by bingo, beer and Wigan Salad.
Dreamers or Builders? is an Oasis Social Club event which was originally co-commissioned by Appetite and They Eat Culture and is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. It is part of the London Festival of Architecture 2016.
A preliminary conversation to this event 'Opportunity Area' will take place at Elephant and Castle on June 6.
