Welcome to the London Architecture Diary, your essential guide to architecture exhibitions and events taking place across the city, brought to you by New London Architecture.
For decades Somers Town has been known for its innovative social housing. But suddenly its land has become subject to the dual pressures of vast infrastructure projects and the fashion for “intensification”. Somers Town: What future? invites you to come and learn more about the story of a community fighting for its identity, vitality and sanity in the 21st century.
Bordered by the fast-changing N1C, threatened by HS2, undermined (quite literally) by Crossrail 2 and facing the possibilty of the local council building luxury housing on its parks, Somers Town is at a turning point: one that many fear could extinguish its existing community. This is why it is timely to reflect on what it means to be a community and on the future of social housing.
The event during the festival will be a culmination of a collaboration between Somers Town Neighbourhood Forum, local artist Diana Foster and the Temporary Action Studio. Every Friday from the end of April until June, the Chalton Gallery will act as a basecamp to create a series of workshops and gatherings to explore and action ideas for the future of Somers Town.
Somers town: What future? will be a programme of walks, a screening of Somerstown wishes – a film by Diana Foster documenting local views on current changes – as well as rare archival photographs from early housing association contrasting with a contemporary crowd sourced photography exhibition. Talks will be held with local activists, architects and politicians to debate community and change in "Somers Town: What is its future?”
During the London Architecture Festival, Somers Town will be transformed into a space where residents, artists, planners and local councillors will meet and debate the future. This is sure to be an exciting and thought-provoking event.
