An Evening With...Modern Mews

Organized by: Open City
Bayswater, exact address provided to bookers
W2

This evening event will give an exclusive opportunity to tour RIBA Award Winner Modern Mews with the owners and Coffey Architects.

The owners, wanted to remodel their existing four-storey, slightly dilapidated mews house in Bayswater. The main objectives were to unify the house and make better use of the different spaces.

Despite being 8 m deep in plan, it only had windows to the front, which of course made it dark and dingy. The master bedroom and en-suite enjoyed no natural light at all. The top-floor bedrooms were accessed by a tiny spiral staircase and so felt disconnected from the rest of the house. It was especially important to open the house up to more natural daylight.

Coffey Architects gutted the house, keeping only the envelope. Into the new space were inserted new sculptural timber and glazing elements to connect the spaces clearly. To rationalize wasteful corridor space, they designed a new stair to the centre of the house.

The detailing is exquisite, the warmth of the oak timber brings a tactile quality which is further enhanced by the sliding doors, which with an inner layer of rice-paper sets up illusionary views across the plan. Light penetrates the new glazed roof above and through the staircase’s open treads and glazed landings, allowing daylight into the previously dark lower reaches of the house. The transparency also allows a visual connection between floors.

Each tour duration 1 hour. Places are limited to 6 per tour and 2 places per purchase. Cost £35.50 with complimentary prosecco and nibbles.
